A new way of container gardening that is growing in popularity is bottomless plant pots. You can have many advantages over traditional container gardening. This type of gardening allows you the option to use hydroponic nutrients directly on your plants’ roots. The container’s bottom does not have to be visible for visitors to see. This type of gardening can help you save space in a small apartment or house and is an economical way to grow a variety of vegetables or flowers. These container gardening pots are usually made of glass or plastic and some come with a built-in water reservoir.
DIY Bottomless Plant Pots: Simply insert a shallow cylinder, big enough to cover the full space from rim to rim in bottomless plant pots. Then place the deep soil inside the pot, fill with potting medium and/or compost. Add plants about two to three inches deep. Water well, just as you would with traditional garden soil. Be sure you water deep enough to get the roots of your favorite plants.
There are several advantages to using bottomless plant pots, especially for those who do not have a traditional garden with a “ring culture”. One is keeping your plants healthier. If you plant your seeds in the ground directly, there is nothing holding the roots down. The roots go down into the dirt where they are exposed to oxygen.
But with bottomless plant pots, there is a layer of soil with the roots. Therefore, it is much easier for your plants to absorb nutrients because there is more of it for them to absorb. Your plants will enjoy having deeper roots because that means their overall health will be better. And this means a healthier harvest!
Another advantage of bottomless plant pots is that your tomatoes won’t have to waste precious fruit or vegetable space. You can grow plenty of seeds in small containers but unless they get to the light of day before you harvest, they will not be able to sprout. Bottomless plant pots allow the air to circulate around the seedlings, and this will help keep the soil moist so that the plant seeds stay wet and develop properly.
When you are ready to put your tomatoes in your garden, you will want to mulch the beds to help keep the heat contained and to protect the roots of your new garden tomato plants. And to start with, you can always add some compost when you are ready to give your soil a rest and a break. No matter how often you water, the compost will hold on to the water and allow it to break up any excess moisture that has been sitting in your garden soil for some time.
So, let’s say that you are going to plant two rows of tomatoes and two plants per pot. You will need about three liters of soil to go with the tomatoes and approximately 23cm of soil per pot. Now, before you begin digging your hole for your new tomato plant, you will want to place a container on the ground approximately 23cm deep, making sure it is level. This is a great way to make sure that your hole will be deep enough for the soil to drain easily and that there will not be any clogging issues.
Once you have placed your dirt in the pot, you will then cover it with dirt and begin building up the sides of the box by pushing the dirt in. It is important to know that you are working with what is called a ‘soil mass’ and that your roots will work their way through from the bottom upwards. Now you can begin planting your bottomless planter using your manual hand.
