Container gardening for beginners doesn’t have to be about compact plants or aromatic herbs and spices. In fact, container gardening is the perfect way to learn how to grow your own food. You can grow just about any plant you love in a container nowadays without needing a green thumb. Not having the sunlight or the proper amount of moisture because of weather or location problems? Install grow lights. These are the modern equivalent of the gardeners before, who had no idea about irrigation systems and the like.
Most people think that container gardening is strictly for the younger growing folks, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Even people in their thirties and up can have a great looking garden if they just put some time and effort into it. The thing about container gardening is that you can easily grow vegetables that require relatively less water than other plants. This means you can have a vegetable garden on a much smaller scale than you might if you had a large yard to work with.
Just because you have limited space doesn’t mean that you can’t have a neat looking plant. If you’re new to container gardening, you need to start with a few tips to make sure you plant your plants in the right spot. One of the most important factors in the spot you plant your plant is whether it’s going to receive sunlight during the day or not. If it’s going to get dark during the day, then you’ll want to place your plant in an area where it can get some morning sunlight.
Another important factor in choosing containers for your garden is how big of a container you’re going to choose. If you’re just starting out, and your aim is simply to have something that will give your garden a little extra space, then you can buy a small pot that’s only three to four inches in diameter. However, if you have some experience, and you want to grow a plant that’s a bit larger than your thumb, then you can get a garden pot that’s between seven and ten inches in diameter. These are just a few examples of what you can get as your first container garden. As you become more experienced, you’ll find that there are many options for you to choose from.
Vegetables like radishes and cucumbers are very easy to grow in containers. You don’t even need to have special growing pots. Simply pick up a variety that you like to grow and place it in an inexpensive container pot. Both radishes and cucumbers love water. With both of these plants, it’s best to place them in an area that gets about six to eight hours of sun a day. That way they can receive the proper amount of water without being overwatered.
One thing you need to know about plants is that they require drainage. So, when you’re planting vegetables in containers, make sure that you have good drainage. Your garden soil will also need to drain well if you plan on planting radishes or cucumbers in pots.
Once your garden soil and potting materials are ready, you’ll need to put your seeds in. Most people start with a single type of vegetable because it’s easier to grow a single type than it is to grow an entire garden. However, it’s usually a good idea to mix things up and do a combination of vegetables to see which ones will thrive. Some of the plants that flourish well in gardenias are potatoes, peppers, onions, peas, carrots, squash and corn.
The seeds that you get will need to be planted in a potting mix that is at least one inch deep. In addition, the mix should be about two inches deep and a quarter inch wide. Keep in mind that the seeds need to be planted in water, but not over water them. If they get too wet, they will drown and die.
