If you’re new to gardening, or just want a few helpful tips for starting out with your own garden, I’ve compiled a carnivorous plants list. To make the list, I grouped plants into four main categories: omnivores, semi-dormant, dethatching, or semi-aquatic. There are also plants that fall under both categories. The carnivorous plants are generally smaller than their non-carnivore relatives.
Cattails, slugs, crayfish, frogs, earthworms, salamanders, alligators, mosquitoes, chiggers, ticks, mites, and spiders are all considered carnivorous plants. The Cattail, which is native to Central and South America, can grow up to six meters in length and have a wide distribution across swampy areas. It can be found in high humidity areas of the Andes Mountains as well as rain forests. The Cattail’s omnivore habits include eating just about anything – even bloodworms. On the other hand, the Cattail’s semi-dormant habits make it suitable for growing in low-lying areas as long as it gets enough light and warmth.
carnivorous plants such as the Shasta Rattan and Woodland Slender are also suitable for growing in low lying areas, though they tend to grow much taller. The biggest threat to Shastas and Woodlands Slender is the larvae and eggs of aphids that usually feed on them. It is very important, then, to control aphid infestations before they can even infest your plants. This is easily accomplished by placing aquatic plants on top of the substrate in your terrariums or grow beds, or by regularly cleaning the top of the substrate in order to prevent the growth of new Aphids.
Some plants have slower growing tendencies than others, especially when they are under severe stress. For example, if a plant is under constant stress, it may take longer for it to recover from that stress and bloom. In this case, the fastest growing dormancy plant would be the one that is not subject to extreme stress, whether or not it is an annual. In any case, the slower-growing plants in the sub-order Satyrium and Ceramics are probably best for use in low-light terrariums.
Some of the most popular low-light plants for use in a home aquarium are the Dwarf Juniper, Loblolly Pine, Buttonwood, Ficus, Sedum Leaf and Staghorn Fern. The Dwarf Juniper is probably the easiest to grow, but many people find that they are not quite suitable for use in low-light environments, because they do not have the tendency to produce berries. If you are planning on growing a Dwarf juniper for your home aquarium, you may wish to consider planting them in a terrarium with a substrate such as Petri-Wood. This will provide them with their own nutrition, as well as providing them with the moisture they will need to grow happily.
An important factor that many people do not consider when growing carnivorous plants is the humidity level of the environment in which they grow. It is imperative that you maintain a consistent moisture content in your aquarium to keep your aquatic friends healthy. Too much humidity can make it difficult for plants to grow, as well as making it very difficult for the fish to survive. You should monitor the humidity in the water by using a moisture meter, because the level can rise and fall rapidly if you do not monitor it.
You can purchase or collect any variety of carnivorous plants from numerous online sources. Some of the more common species include African violet, butterfly bush, bloodroot, Chinese elm, cocklebur, delphiniums, heart weed, meadow rose, petunias, purslane, rock wool, windseeker, witch hazel, and witch hazel. Some of these are grown primarily in the United States and can be shipped fairly inexpensively; others are imported and are much more expensive. You can also find sundew plants for your garden, some of which are considered annuals. If you want to start with an aquarium full of carnivorous plants, you should begin with some of the most popular selections on the Sundew plants list.
Many plants will not attract insects. However, insects are drawn to carnivorous plants, making them beneficial to have around. Begin with a few of these beneficial insects, then introduce more as your population grows. In time, you will have an entire garden of insects that you can feed on, which will eventually help boost your own health.
